Building an E-Curriculum

For Global Connectivity and Exchanges

iEARN – Bridge Second Regional Conference

July 6 – 11, 2004

Amman, Jordan

IEARN (International Education and Resource Network) is a non-profit organization made up of over 25,000 schools in 109 countries.  iEARN empowers teachers and young people to work together online using the Internet and other new communications technologies and gives them expanded opportunities to create and adapt curricula.  Since 1988, iEARN, has pioneered on-line school linkages to enable students to engage in meaningful educational projects with peers in their countries and around the world in a safe and tolerant environment.  iEARN projects combine information technologies, project based learning, group cooperation, and cultural exchange across the major curriculum areas.

Regional Conference, Amman-Jordan

During the first week of July 2004, some 150 educators from 18 countries will convene in Amman, Jordan to promote cross-cultural education through student-centred learning projects. Under the auspices of the Jordanian Ministry of Education, the conference will be hosted by iEARN-Jordan in partnership with iEARN-USA, and in cooperation with iEARN country programs around the world.  The enthusiasm for face-to-face meetings among BRIDGE participants is very high and previous BRIDGE and CIVICS regional conferences in Egypt have motivated countries new to iEARN to become more deeply engaged.

The conference will showcase new partnerships, new classroom tools, and the educators and students who developed these resources. Several U.S. educators will travel to Jordan to participate in the five-day event, which will feature visits to Jordanian schools, workshops, cultural activities, and a community service-learning activity.  Presenters at the conference will illustrate iEARN programs through a series of workshops that demonstrate youth empowerment through projects in environmental sciences, social studies, arts, language arts, and mathematics.  In addition, iEARN will conduct a three-day train-the-trainer workshop before the conference to expand the number of BRIDGE educator-trainers available in the future.

The conference’s objectives are to:

  • Enable participants to become more deeply engaged in iEARN projects
  • Showcase partnerships, classroom tools and work of educators and students
  • Broaden networks and collaborations between BRIDGE II participants across borders

This international gathering represents the ongoing efforts of teachers and students participating in iEARN’s collaborative educations programs. The conference will bring together teachers and students from the United States, North Africa, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia, and is open to educators from around the world.

During the five-day program participants will also experience the famous Jordanian hospitality through interaction with Jordanian teachers, school and home visits, and cultural events.

Support for the conference is being provided by iEARN Jordan, iEARN-USA, the Jordanian Ministry of Education, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State, Progress Travel, al-Quds College, Apple-Malaysia, and other international and local partners.
