May 21, 2005: Supported with funds from the BRIDGE program, Jordan hosted its first ever Environmental Day with flying colors. The event, with the hard work and effort of students, the Ministry of Education and iEARN Jordan, brings all participants closer to one day holding another event simultaneously with YouthCaN Med and YouthCaN held in Lebanon, the United States and Egypt.  145 students - male and female - from 12 different schools attended the event and took part in the day's activities.  Students were supervised by Mr. Hani Tashman who assisted in organizing the event.

The event started with Jordan's National Anthem. The Secretary General was deputized by the Minister of the Environment to open the event. His Excellency addressed the students by saying "It gives a pleasure to be part of such an event and we thank iEARN Jordan for organizing it. We at the Ministry rely on such an organization to educate students on the importance of conserving our environment.” Three groups of students participated in three different community service activities including: the Prince Zaha Center for Children to clean facilities and play with the children, a visit to a senior citizen home to read stories and give presents to the elderly, and a tree planting activity at the Asriyya School.

Many students participated in the environmental drawing competition where the students spent three hours among the trees and nature painting. By the end of the day, three paintings were chosen by a professional committee headed by a professor from The Hashemite University.  Other activities included paper recycling, wax recycling and perfume extracting from the natural plants. All three workshops were presented by students and consisted of interactive hands-on activities for peer to peer training. This enabled students to engage in workshops in order to help them train other students in their respective  schools.  The day also included lectures by The Royal Society of Nature Reservation and student performances in two environmental plays.

At the closing ceremony, certificates of participation were distributed to the schools and the results from the painting competition were announced. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment expressed his thanks to iEARN  Jordan for organizing the event and expressed the Ministry’s full support to all activities iEARN holds. iEARN Jordan suggested that the government assign a barren mountain to plant over a period of three years by encouraging iEARN students to go their regularly and plant trees/flowers. His Excellency welcomed the idea and promised to discuss it at a future meeting of the government for legal processing and to locate a suitable site for nature conservation.

The day was a true success for iEARN youth, teachers, schools and the Ministry.
